The Amrel ROCKY RT is a solid, rugged laptop that has two base models – the industrial version: ROCKY RT-I, and the military version: ROCKY RT-M. Even though Amrel is a smaller manufacture than some of the others, they offer customization options to fit exactly what you are looking for. While this durable laptop lacks one of the certifications offered by the Getac B300, it offers more ports and connectivity options than the Panasonic Toughbook 31, and earns our TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award.
The military model of this rugged laptop meets more of rigid requirements when it comes to the durability and certification. By having two models, Amrel is able to meet the needs of both the industrial and military fields. The biggest difference between the two rugged laptop models is the additional MIL-STD 461. This certification deals with the control of electromagnetic interference and emissions.
Both models boast the MIL-STD 810 and IP54 certifications. While the IP code is not as high as some of the other rugged laptops in our lineup, it still means the unit can function in a dust storm and that it is a water resistant laptop. It isn’t suggested to have the device in line of water jets, but this waterproof laptop can survive splashing water just fine. If you are curious about the certification, the manufacturer includes all of the test information on their website. This includes descriptions of each test to let you know that their units meet all of the requirements for being a fully rugged notebook. You don’t have to fear the elements when you are out working in the field.
This is a great durable laptop even without all of the certifications. It has a 13.3-inch XGA screen which uses their Alpha Start SRL display technology, so you have great visibility even in direct sunlight. This is a must when working outdoors collecting data. Other features include a battery life long enough to make it through the whole work day and a tough magnesium case with sealed ports, ensuring your water resistant laptop stays nice and dry.
Other basic hardware features include:
The standard ports available on this durable laptop include two IEEE ports, two serial ports, three audio ports, three USB ports and even a keyboard and mouse ps/2 port. The operating system available for this rugged computer is Windows Vista Business. Windows XP is available on request. These rugged notebooks also have the Fault Tolerant Isolation Design specific to this manufacturer. This design keeps individual components separate and chambered. If there happens to be a fault in one of the chambers, the damage is contained and limited.
One of the unique features of this durable laptop is the color options. Not only is the case available in black, which is standard for the industrial model, but is it also available in military green. (Also known as OD green or NATO green.) This non-reflective finish is valuable for any military application because of the low profile requirement for stealth. The military rugged computer is also available in black.
Amrel has customization down to an art. Not only are the connectivity options available (Bluetooth, wireless, HSDPA 3.5G and GPS), but there is also the resistive touchscreen and military connectors for this rugged laptop. These upgrades, and many others, make this water resistant laptop perfect for anyone with a specific requirement. Each of these options can be determined when you place your order.
Some of the other customization options we liked were the backlit keyboard, vehicle adapter and heater. With a backlit keyboard you can use the rugged notebook even in dark locations without worrying about a misplaced keystroke. The vehicle adapter allows you to mount and dismount your rugged laptop easily and still keep it easy at hand while in the car. Even if a newer model is released, Amrel strives for extended end of life support for its devices, and the docks should be able to be used until they die. For example, you can use newer rugged laptops with docks for previous models. A heater means that you can operate the device in extreme cold and not worry about the screen or other components freezing. The operating temperature for this rugged computer is -4° F to 122° F (-20° C to 50° C). The storage temperature is -40° F to 158° F (-40° C to 70° C).
